2015 Heart of Carolina

Inclement Weather Announcement

Wakefield regrets to announce the cancellation of the 2015 Heart of Carolina Marching Band Invitational.

Due to deteriorating field conditions, Wake County Schools made a system wide announcement that all scheduled activities on playing fields would be cancelled this weekend.  The benefits for an indoor competition were weighed against various other factors and after consultation with all the participating bands and the school staff, the decision to cancel was reached.

Thank you for your support of our program and our students.

The ramps are designed with interlocking extensions at their tops which hold the three ramps together and prevent them from tipping or moving during performance.  The extensions also serve as the base for the platform, which is also reinforced to allow for students standing on or walking across the platform.  At their tallest point, the ramps are 20" tall.

Greetings Band Parents,

I would like to share an exchange that I saw today that really brought home as to why we volunteer!

Today we were serving breakfast to the returning teachers as they prepare for the new school year, I saw the smiles on their faces as they saw all that was prepared for them by parents and a few students!!  I realized at that moment that we give of ourselves not because we have to but for the simple joy we receive when we see the smiles on other people faces by our work!

Before you head out to enjoy your summer vacation, please be sure to sign up to work a shift during band Camp or one of the evening rehearsals during the month of August.

This year band camp runs from July 23-August 03. Volunteers are needed at rehearsals to supply water, assist with meals, assist students and staff, and administer first aid. Each family is asked to work at least one shift during band cam or evening rehearsals. However, everyone is welcome and encouraged to work additional shifts if interested. Typically, about four volunteers are needed for each shift during rehearsals.

If you have indicated that you would like to work with uniforms you will be contacted directly by Lori Hubbard.

Parents of Color Guard students: you will be contacted directly by Annabelle Matherly to schedule a work time to work on flags. Look for an email sometime in the first week of July.

The Wakefield High School Orchestra is taking part in the Glee Give a Note competition. Glee is giving away $1 million to arts programs across the country. Wakefield is the only orchestra in Wake County participating. The students made a video demonstrating their skills and diverse talents. In order to win we need as many votes as we can get. This is where you come in. To vote, go to the Give a note website and press the vote button next to our video. One vote a day per I.P. address is allowed. You can also vote on your phones. Our orchestra would greatly benefit from and appreciate your votes. We hope to create new opportunities for the music program with any money received from this contest. Voting lasts until November 7, 2011. Thank you for your time and happy voting.

From the Podium

Dear Parents, Students and Supporters of the Wakefield Band Program,

The Heart of Carolina Marching Competition is an event I have only seen as an outsider, before this year. As an instructor, I would show up with my band, watch them perform and of course tear into the wonderful refreshments offered in the press box! It never occurred to me how much time, effort and commitment it took to make such an event seem so effortless and smooth.

Now that I have seen things from a new perspective, I must say, I am impressed in every way by the amount of dedication that has been put in to make H.O.C. 2011 an incredible success. As a Band Director, it is very easy to get caught up in the show and so focused about the student’s performance and I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have such an incredible band parent organization to count on. Without your support, hard work and dedication, this program would not be what it is today. As we prepare for the second half of the season, please know that your continued efforts to make this season successful is greatly appreciated. This is just one more reason that I knew I made the right choice by moving back to North Carolina.

Best Regards,
Morgan Brockman, Director of Bands
Wakefield High School

Thank You from the HOC Committee

We would like to thank all our volunteers for making our 9th annual Heart of Carolina event a great success!  I heard nothing but complements from our visitors regarding our hospitality and offerings at our event.  HOC truly brings out the best in our band family.

We had a lot of alumni parents who came and help us with double shifts because they know what it takes to have a successful event and they love this program.  A few of our alumni parents were even Chairpersons!

A special thank you to all our Chairpersons who have been preparing for this event since July.  They truly made Patti and my jobs so much easier.

I came upon this quote that I would like to share with you, "Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart." Thank you for your time and your heart.

Michelle Skerlos and Patti Pilarinos

Hi folks,

Four full days of band camp are history and the band continues to make progress and have a great time.
Today began with the entire band going through warm up and stretch as a large group.  Because the forecast was for a very hot day the band skipped the "body by Brockman" strength training today and the horn line and guard went out early on the field to set the drill for the second movement of the show.

In parallel the percussion group worked indoors on musical warm ups.

Mid-day the whole band came together inside for lunch and council games.

After lunch the entire band stayed inside and the horn line practiced music for the second movement of the show, while the guard and percussion continued to work in parallel as individual sections.

The entire band came together to enjoy some freshly grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. After dinner the entire band went out side and worked very hard on continuous performances of the introduction and movement one as continuous run throughs with drill and music.

Many folks enjoyed an ice pop on the way out the door for home after a great day of putting the show together.

---Couple of reminders for Friday---

The students should be at the school tomorrow at 8:30 with a pair of black socks for picture day.

Also, be sure to come up to the high school tomorrow night at 6pm to see the band run through a section of the show prior to the pot luck.  And speaking of the pot luck, please look back at your band camp packet to see what dish you are asked to bring to the dinner.

In addition, props and flags will be under construction all day tomorrow so please come up to the school if you can to help out.

And finally, don't forget that Mr. Brockman will be available for questions and answers during the pot luck tomorrow night and the band booster board will also be there with taking apparel orders and giving you more information about signing up to raise fair share money by working at RBC.

Hope to see you tomorrow.

Best regards,

Kevin Sheehan

I just wanted to send a note to everyone to express my excitement in the selection of Mr. Morgan Brockman as the next Director of Bands at Wakefield High School.  Mr. Brockman comes with a large amount of experience in all elements of a comprehensive music education program.  His experience in the pageantry arts (Marching Band, Winter Programs) is exceptional.  I can see that his energy and experience will allow him to be a great fit for the needs of the WHS Bands.  I commend Mr. Crayton and the WHS Administration on their efforts in securing someone like Mr. Brockman.  I am also grateful to them for making this a priority for our students.  Their efforts to get Mr. Brockman through the hiring process and available as quickly as possible has been remarkable.  I look forward to seeing what great things are accomplished in the future of the WHS Bands with the remarkable support of the parents, tremendous efforts of the students that has always been in place, under the very capable leadership of Mr. Brockman!

Volunteers Needed

The hot days of summer are upon us which means Band Camp is just around the corner! I want to thank those parents who have already signed up to volunteer one or more shifts during that time. It is greatly appreciated!

However, we are still in need of many more volunteers for Band Camp (July 20th-July 29th). At this time only about 40% of the volunteer shifts have been filled. If one member from each band family would volunteer during Band Camp, all the shifts would be filled.

Also, if you have a vehicle with a trailer hitch we need your help to take the band's utility trailer to the Wake County Landfill. Additional utility trailers would be helpful.

The Wakefield HS Maroon Winter Guard completed its 2011 season at Winter Guard International World Championships this past weekend in Dayton, Ohio.  For a second consecutive year, the team made Scholastic Open finals, finishing 14th in the world.  This is the first time in WHS history that our students has earned finalists status in consecutive years.  This was particularly impressive, given the fact that we graduated all but 3 members of last year's team that finished 8th in the World.  In addition, this year's Scholastic Open class was consider by most to be the most competitive of the 6 divisions of WGI.  As a measure of how extremely competitive it was, there were 3 finalists from last year that did not even make semi-finals.  Congratulations are in order for the members of the team and the staff.  A huge thank you goes to the parents who supported their efforts throughout the season.

Charms is Now Open and Accepting Volunteers for the Heart of Carolina (HOC) Marching Band Invitational on October 2, 2010

This is what everyone has been waiting for.  Charms is now open and accepting volunteers for the Heart of Carolina (HOC) Marching Band Invitational we are hosting on October 2, 2010.  This competition is our biggest fundraiser.  Last year approximately 5,500 high school musicians and spectators from across the state of North Carolina attended this event.  This year we are expecting the same beautiful fall day and the same size crowd, if not more.   What this means, is that we need your help!  In fact, it is a requirement that we have one adult volunteer from every band family work at least one shift during the day.  If you are able to work additional shifts, please consider signing up for more than one shift.  Remember, the more the merrier and the more hands we have on deck, the lighter the work for all involved.

As we have now officially began the 2010-2011 band year I wanted to send a brief email to welcome you and let you know how excited we are for the adventure ahead.  We have put together a talented and dedicated staff to work with your students.  Our design team is thrilled with the progress thus far with the development of our production, Ladder of Life.  I look forward to the opportunity to work with you, our parents, thoughout the year in the many different capacities that help to support our students.  After a year in which we celebrated our first decade together, this year will bring several initiatives to make sure we are on the correct path as we take our first steps in the 2nd decade.  I look forward to sharing them with you as we progress.  A few notes and date changes I want to go ahead and make you aware of.

On Thursday, July 29, 2010 we will have a New Parent Orientation Meeting at 7 pm for those of you new to the program.   The new parent meeting will include an overview of the marching band program and also introduce a new program, Parent Band Buddies, which will partner new parents with a parent who has been in the program for several years. You will meet your assigned band buddy and get their contact information.   This meeting will be followed by a General Meeting for All Parents at 7:30pm.  The General Meeting will cover a number of important areas, including the Bands of America trip and local competitions, the Heart of Carolina Festival, fundraising opportunities at the RBC center, volunteer opportunities and needs of the band, upcoming additional fundraising activities, and we'll talk about keeping in touch throughout the year.  It's a full slate, so please mark your calendar and make every effort to attend.
